MRI Guided Biopsy
MRI Guided Core Needle Biopsy
Magnetic Resonance Imaging is the most sensitive way to look at the breast tissue. MRI uses no radiation and the biopsy may take 30 to 40 minutes. This procedure usually requires advance scheduling.
During the procedure, you will be placed tummy down, just as you were for your MRI. The breast to be biopsied is gently compressed on the sides with a grid and open paddle placed against the breast in the direction of biopsy. You be guided into the magnet with a localizing sequence. A contrast solution is then injected into a vein and the imaging sequence is repeated.
Next, you come out of the magnet but remain still as the area to be biopsied is identified. The overlying skin is cleansed with betadine or alcohol. A local anesthetic of lidocaine is given to numb the skin, followed by a deeper anesthetic of lidocaine with a small amount of epinephrine. The numbing process takes a few seconds and is the most pain you should feel during the procedure.
A small skin incision is made and then the biopsy device is inserted to the area to be sampled. You are then returned into the magnet for a confirming scan. Once that is finished, you are brought out of the magnet for the biopsy, which takes a matter of seconds. A tissue marker is also placed in the biopsy site followed by another scan by the magnet to confirm that the sampling was accurate.
After the biopsy, local pressure is applied until there is no bleeding and a bandage is placed over the wound. Instructions on taking care of yourself after the biopsy are reviewed by our staff and a copy is sent home with you.
You will be given a two-view mammogram before you leave the center in order for us to document the tissue marker position.
Results are usually received within two business days. Our physicians are available by phone after hours should have any concerns after your biopsy.
